| There is a wealth of activities
to enjoy while you are here, and you can choose to do as
much or as little as you like. Don’t forget your camera
and binoculars.
Half-Day and All-Day Horseback
Rides
Our main activity is the daily horseback
ride. Each one taking you to a wonderfully different
area. There are both half day and all day rides where we
pack a tasty lunch in the saddlebags to eat by a babbling
brook or on top of a mountain. Each ride is guided by our
expert crew who know the area like the back of their hands
and relish sharing it with their guests. We take all level
of riders from beginners to expert.
Hiking
The
ranch is surrounded by many trails taking you to some wonderful
locations such as Hidden Lake or the top of Mt Wright or
Headquarters Pass. It is a great chance to spot some of
the wildlife that inhabits this area and the unique vegetation.
Visit old indian camping grounds where the stone rings of
teepees are still visible or the old “North Trail”,
or “Pondera Trail” which the indians traveled
with their travois between Canada and points farther south,
and later on the Metis as they migrated south out of Canada
in their Red River carts to settle in the canyons and foothills
here along the “Front”. We can provide expert
guides to provide a more informative experience if desired.
Bird Watching
This
area is renowned for its unusual species and is very popular
with orinthologists. Grab your binoculars and expect to
see Calliope and Rufus hummingbirds from our dining room
windows, Dusky Flycatchers, Spruce Grouse, Cassin’s
Finch, Red Crossbill, Cinnamon Teal, Ferrungus Hawks, Golden
Eagles, Dippers, and the beautiful Western Tananger and
Pine Grosbeak among many other breeds.
Fishing, Swimming and Tubing
The ranch is within reach of many lakes
and reservoirs as well as being a stone’s throw away
from the Teton River. We can arrange a day’s trout
fishing or on a warm sunny day float lazily down the river
between the mountains on an inner tube.
Wildlife Viewing
Montana, and specifically the Rocky Mountain
Front, is famed for it’s diverse species of wildlife
which have roamed the prairies and the mountains for centuries
before mankind came. Most famous for the Grizzly Bear, you
can also spot black and brown bear, elk, mule and whitetail
deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, moose, beaver along
the river, and the occasional bobcat, mountain lion or wolf
if you’re lucky.
Day Trips and Places of
Interest
Choteau
Choteau is 25 miles from the ranch and
our nearest town. It is a small ranching and farming community
of around 1700 inhabitants. It has a fine dinosaur museum,
complete with full size replicas. Choteau is the home
of ‘Egg Mountain’ where the first dinosaur
nests were discovered in North America. We can help organize
a field trip with a paleontologist to learn about the
techniques involved in fossil collection. Choteau also
has a nice golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts.
The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center,
Great Falls
As
the Lewis and Clark Bicentenial is in full swing, follow
their adventures as they made their way up the Missouri
River, right through this part of Montana. The complete
and extensive exhibition had its grand opening in July
1998 and continues to remain a very popular destination
for locals and visitors alike.
Glacier National Park
Only 90 miles from the ranch, Glacier
is a must for any visitor to The Big Sky Country. It can
be toured in a day and one can enjoy the feast of alpine
lakes, sheer drop cliffs and panoramic vistas afford spectacular
views around every bend. The drive along the Going-to-the-Sun
Road over Logan Pass alone is an experience one never
forgets. Wildlife abounds within the park borders.
Other Activities
During
your stay at the ranch we will have a cook-out, either riding
or driving to an ideal spot for a barbecue. There is also
a volleyball net, basketball hoop, pool table and horseshoe
pit for anyone with energy left in the evenings. We have
a grand piano in the main lodge where guests are invited
to play if they wish and a library of books on the region
and history of Montana for your interest. We and the crew
are here to help you make the most of your time here, so
just ask if you have any questions.
Conference Facilities
We are very pleased to offer a separate
room, fully equipped with projector, screen, television
and other equipment to give your conference or meeting a
